Knysna Literary Festival Kicks off with Packed Auditoriums in Celebration of Youth Day on 18 March 2014

Now in its 5th year, the Knysna Literary Festival – presented by Pam Golding Properties – officially commenced today in a celebration of Youth starting with The Lilliput Children's Theatre starring Red Riding Hood, followed by the Young Writer’s Awards Ceremony, where winners of the annual creative writing competition were announced.

Festival founder, Ling Dobson says, “Year after year the festival just gets better and better. We had a record number of nearly 200 entries to the Young Writers Awards, and for the first time, the Children’s Theatre was a sold out affair.” Dobson continues, “It’s personally just so rewarding to see busloads of children arriving in anticipation to see the theatre show – the smiles on their faces and the happiness in their hearts. One really gets the feeling that the Knysna Literary Festival is making a real difference in their lives – inspiring an interest in literature and literacy, which is really what it’s all about.”

Dobson says today’s Young Writers Award Ceremony was equally well received. “Author and Knysna local, Ivo Vegter, addressed the young hopefuls with an inspiring speech about reaching out for one’s dreams. We were truly blessed to have such an amazingly talented writer share his knowledge and experience with younger, hopeful writers. The excitement of hearing who the 2014 winners are simply permeated the room.”

The 2014 winners of the Young Writers Awards are:

Festival Manager Sasha Campbell says today’s sold out event will be a common theme for the rest of the Knysna Literary Festival. “The public interest this year has really been phenomenal, not only locally but nationally as well. A good portion of our attendees will be flying in from Johannesburg and driving from other parts of the Western and Eastern Capes to enjoy the programme over the long weekend in Knysna, and many of our most popular events have sold out in advance!”

“But...” she added, “there are still some tickets left – the best will be to visit the programme on our website for the most up to date information.”

Campbell is thankful to festival sponsors and the many volunteers for their involvement in the festival’s success. “We would be nowhere without the amazing generosity of our volunteers and sponsors – including BASA, Conrad Pezula, FutureLife, Knysna Primary School, Pam Golding Properties, and Super Spar – who have given of their time, money and resources to help the Knysna Literary Festival get to where it is today.”

Presented by Pam Golding Properties, the 5th annual festival takes place 18-23 March 2014 with 12 events and some 18 top authors taking part. Ticket prices vary by event and can be purchased in advance via EFT. For more information, visit or phone 044 382 5574.
