Knysna Litarary Festival Official Press Release

Knysna's tapestry of beauty, Sun and Fun, Culture and History is rich and colourful, and much loved and sought after by South Africans as well as the international fraternity.  As the Franchisee and Principal of Pam Golding Properties, Knysna, I believe it important to give back to the community that we are servicing.

Knysna is known for, and very popular as an active sporting destination. Yet, are our children and their education cared for? Are they exposed to the enjoyment of writing and reading?  We wanted to contribute and assist in the Joy of Giving and assist in generating this awareness for the children of Knysna. They are our future community leaders.
We wanted the whole town to embrace the character and heritage that has always made Knysna special. Many new residents are arriving annually in Knysna.  They are drawn by the beauty of the town and lagoon, but often totally unaware of the incredible unique heritage of history and culture that has meshed together to make our town so special.

We have chosen two projects to contribute to for this 2012 year's Literary Festival's.
e'Pap Children's Feed Project - e'Pap feeds in excess of 4,000 children in the Garden Route area. With e'Pap's unique formula, it builds healthy bodies, by strengthening the immune system, thus also stimulating their minds to be receptive to knowledge!

TSiBA Eden Campus Library - TSiBA Eden is an NGO tertiary business school situated at the foot of the Outeniqua mountains in Karatara, a small rural village near Knysna on the Garden Route. By combining skill acquisition with personal development TSiBA Eden has positioned itself at the forefront of quality tertiary education delivery in SA.

Students' writer competition  -  To stimulate the children of Knysna we are organizing with the various schools throughout the area a competition to embrace both poetry as well as narrative storytelling, challenging their young minds, with prizes of books and iPads. Read some of the previous winners' entries on our website.

This year's Literary Festival has something to tickle and inspire your senses with current affairs, history and mystery.  Mandy Weiner, an award-wining investigative journalist who is regularly heard on several talk radio stations. Her book, “Killing Kebble” sold over 10,000 copies in the first four days.

The raconteur, Rob Caskie, will capture our imagination and emotions, transporting us back to the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, two of the most famous battles of the Anglo Zulu War, an event that changed South Africa's history and inspired so many authors.

Michael Standley, the pen name for Stanley Trollip and Michael Sears – friends for nearly 30 years and together they have traveled the wilds of southern Africa, which has inspired their mystery detective novels interwoven with the African experience. Both have been professors and have worked in academia and business.  They have had many adventures on these trips including tracking lions at night, fighting bush fires on the Savuti plains in northern Botswana, being charged by an elephant, and having their plane's door pop open over the Kalahari, scattering navigation maps over the desert. These trips have fed their love both for the bush, and for Botswana.

Margie Orford is an award winning journalist and internationally acclaimed writer, and the author of the Clare hart series. Her novels have been translated into 9 languages. Born in London but grew up in Namibia, educated in SA as well as USA.

Mike Nichol is an author, journalist and editor, and more latterly the convener of two online writing courses.  He has contributed to our literary South African heritage with poetry, novels and non-fiction, memoirs and biographies, one of which was about Nelson Mandela.

Ryk Neethling  -  his book, “Chasing the Dream'  is a journey of tenacity and achieving goals!  Olympic medalist, three time World champion, World Record holder and the only South African to compete in four Olympic Games.

Ingrid de Kok – her writing is widely anthologized in SA and abroad.  To date has been translated into 9 different languages and taught at numerous universities.  She has read at major and international festivals.  Her writing fellowships include the Rockerfeller Foundation Residency Fellowship, the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, with awards to her name such as Dalro Poetry Award, Herman Charles Bosman Award for English Literature.

Murderous Ways – A life of Crime (Writers).  This workshop will give you the opportunity to grill three internationally acclaimed crime writers on their 'murderous' ways.  Come and listen and sharpen your skills, or just enjoy the journey of their writings.

And then there is the Delicious Word Journey on Pezula Private Estate. It was such a huge success last year, that it has become the highlight of the Knysna Literary Festival. Starting off at the Pezula Boutique Hotel Cigar Lounge, and from there journeying to some exclusive homes on Pezula Private Estate, exquisite and eco-friendly, where you will be the guest of authors and poets, whilst enjoying the delicate wines from Ataraxa created by Kevin Grant - and having your taste buds challenged by Scotty Rattray, chef extraordinaire and weaver of culinary spells.

Challenge your senses! Come and join us for a real literary experience in Knysna.
