What If?

What if they never came?
Would I still be here,
determined to hold on to the story?
Or would I have passed,
letting the new generation lead?
What if there is no new generation?

Looking back,
I cannot blame my ancestors,
the elders who first saw them.
The forest wanted peace.
The ancestors wanted peace.
But the pale beings did not understand.
Creatures of milky white complexion,
eyes of wonder and learning.
They held an evil we could not understand.
Too long separated - lost to the earth that raised them.

They came for us, blinded by greed.
Shouting and screaming,
slashing at all in their path.
They wanted us dead.
The hunt went on for years - devastating my kind.

I watched it end,
the forest floor stained red.
I hid, weeping for my kind.
For the loss of balance,
the cruelty of fellow beings.
Did they not understand?

What if...the time has come.
To bring forth the shadow of greatness,
that lies hidden and scared in the forest.
What if all they need is a leader?
What if the Elephants live on?
